A three-star circuit with a standard one-bedroom houseboat sits at the starting figure; four-star tea-estate resorts and a premium houseboat add ₹6,000 to ₹10,000 a head over five days; the luxury plans with five-star stays and a private pool villa are two to three times the base. Meals other than breakfast run ₹400 to ₹900 a head a day; Munnar and Thekkady entries (Eravikulam, the tea museum, Periyar boat, the elephant camp) about ₹1,500 a person over the trip.

Best time to visit Kerala and how to reach
Best time
- September to November: the monsoon has just cleared, the hills are at their greenest, the backwaters are full and the rates are still below peak. The best-value season.
- December to February: the peak. Cool mornings in Munnar (10 to 12°C at dawn), the beach season at Varkala and Kovalam, and the busiest houseboats; book six weeks ahead for the Christmas fortnight.
- March to May: warm on the coast (32 to 35°C) and pleasant in Munnar and Thekkady, with the Thrissur Pooram in April and the lowest crowds; a hill-heavy plan works well.
- June to August: the monsoon, heavy in June and July. Ayurveda season, half-price resorts, waterfalls at full flow; the houseboats run and the sea is closed to swimming.
Getting there
Kochi (Cochin) airport is the start of the classic circuit, with non-stop flights from every metro; Kozhikode serves Wayanad and Thiruvananthapuram the beaches, so a north-to-south trip can fly into one and out of the other. Overnight trains reach Ernakulam from Bengaluru and Chennai in about 12 hours and from Hyderabad in about 20. Every trip starts at the airport or the station with a car and driver.
