Four days in Singapore is enough for a first visit that takes in the Night Safari, the city and a full day at Universal Studios, and it works best on one of the late-night flights that land at Changi in the early morning. This 4 day Singapore itinerary follows the shape of our shortest trip, the 4 Days Singapore Quick Getaway: three nights in one hotel, a guided city tour, two big tickets and free sights for the gaps. Day 1: land at Changi, rest, then the Night Safari
The late-night flights from Hyderabad and Bengaluru land at Changi in the early morning; from Hyderabad, between about 5 and 7 am. Clear immigration with your e-visa and the SG Arrival Card you filed online, and take the transfer to the hotel, which our trip includes. An early check-in is not guaranteed, so leave the bags, find breakfast and keep the morning slow. Jewel's Rain Vortex does not run until 10 am, so save it for the way home. Rest in the afternoon, because the day ends late.
The Night Safari in the Mandai reserve opens at 6 pm, and its tram ride and walking trails start at 7 pm; it is about half an hour's drive from Marina Bay outside rush hour. Tickets are S$58 for adults and S$41 for children aged 3 to 12, tram included, and the ticket is part of the Quick Getaway.
Day 2: the city tour, Little India and the Supertree lights
The city tour on our trip is a guided drive through the business district and past the presidential grounds, with stops at the Merlion, the Helix Bridge, the art museum and a historic colonial hotel, and a look at the Fountain of Wealth at Suntec City. Give the afternoon to Little India: Serangoon Road's temples and flower-garland stalls, the Sri Veeramakaliamman temple, and lunch at Tekka Centre's food hall or one of the vegetarian restaurants. If you add Kampong Gelam, the Sultan Mosque is open to visitors 10 am to noon and 2 to 4 pm, Saturday to Thursday, and closed to visitors on Fridays. At the temples and the mosque, no shorts, bare backs or off-shoulder tops, and shoes come off at the door; cover-ups are provided.
In the evening, go to Gardens by the Bay. The Supertree Grove is free, and the Garden Rhapsody light show runs at 7.45 pm and 8.45 pm. The Flower Dome and Cloud Forest cost S$46 for adults and S$32 for children as a pair and are not in the four-day package; they are open 9 am to 9 pm, with last entry at 8 pm for the Cloud Forest and 8.30 pm for the Flower Dome, so go in during the afternoon and come out for the first show. Finish with a walk along the Marina Bay waterfront.
Day 3: a full day at Universal Studios Singapore
Universal Studios on Sentosa is a whole day of rides and shows in themed zones, and a big reason families with children choose Singapore. One-day tickets are S$76 for adults and S$69 for children aged 4 to 12 on non-peak dates, and more on peak dates. The Quick Getaway includes the ticket and the transfers; food and shopping inside the park are on you. Arrive for opening, do the rides with the longest queues first and take a break indoors in the hottest hours. If the children still have energy, have dinner by the beach at Siloso before heading back.
Day 4: a last morning, Jewel and the flight home
How much of Day 4 you get depends on the flight time. With a free morning, shop on Orchard Road or in Little India, then check out; the transfer to the airport is included. At Changi, if you are there between 10 am and 10 pm, walk over to Jewel for the Rain Vortex, the world's tallest indoor waterfall at 40 metres. Tourists aged 16 and over can claim back GST on purchases of S$100 or more (up to three same-day receipts from the same shop) from shops in the eTRS scheme, at the eTRS kiosks before they fly out, less a handling fee, so keep the receipts and the goods with you.
Where to stay for four days
Keep one hotel for all three nights. Marina Bay, Orchard Road and the Clarke Quay riverside put you closest to the evening sights. Little India, Bugis and Chinatown are better value, with a small private double usually from about ₹6,000 to ₹10,000 a night, while four-star doubles run about ₹13,000 to ₹20,000; Little India also puts vegetarian food at the door. A Sentosa resort suits a longer trip with beach days, but on a four-day plan it means changing hotels, and Universal Studios is an easy day trip from the city. Getting around: transfers, the MRT and the Sentosa monorail
On the Quick Getaway, the airport runs, the city tour, the Night Safari and Universal Studios are all on private transfers, so you only need your own transport for the free afternoons and evenings. Universal Studios, the Night Safari and Gardens by the Bay are all within about half an hour's drive of each other outside rush hour. The MRT and basic buses cost S$1.28 to about S$2.57 a ride for adults, and you can tap an Indian Visa or Mastercard straight on the gates and bus readers, paying a S$0.60 foreign card fee for each day you use it. To reach Sentosa on your own, the Sentosa Express monorail from VivoCity costs S$4 to enter the island; walking in is free, though part of the Sentosa Boardwalk is closed for construction until about 2030 and walkers use a covered linkway instead. Singapore is two and a half hours ahead of India.
