The two are about an hour apart by air, so with a week you do not have to choose, and many first-timers from South India split it between them. Malaysia flight times are to Kuala Lumpur. Hotel figures are rough market ranges, and Malaysia's rest on a single booking-site check, so treat them as a guide. Package prices are ours, per person on twin sharing, flights not included.
Visa: an e-visa to arrange, or none at all
Singapore needs a visa before you fly. It goes through a Singapore-authorised visa agent, costs a S$30 processing fee (₹2,100 at the New Delhi and Mumbai missions) plus the agent's service fee of ₹1,000 to ₹1,300, is non-refundable, and usually takes three to five working days. Every traveller also files the free SG Arrival Card within three days before landing. The details are in the Singapore visa for Indians guide.
Malaysia currently lets Indian passport holders in without a visa for up to 30 days; the waiver runs until 31 December 2026, so check again if you travel after that. You file the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online within the three days before you land, and carry a passport valid for six months, a confirmed return ticket and a hotel booking, because immigration can ask for them. More in Malaysia visa-free for Indians. A trip that visits both still needs the Singapore visa, and if the route comes back into Singapore, a single-journey visa will not cover the second entry.
Flights from Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai
Both are short hops, with Kuala Lumpur a little closer. Singapore is served non-stop by Singapore Airlines and IndiGo, with Scoot from Chennai on some days; Kuala Lumpur by AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, IndiGo and Batik Air between them. Typical economy returns over the past year, from KAYAK's fare data, ran ₹23,000 to ₹35,000 to Singapore from Hyderabad and Bengaluru and ₹18,500 to ₹31,000 from Chennai, against ₹23,000 to ₹33,000 to Kuala Lumpur from Hyderabad, ₹21,000 to ₹31,000 from Bengaluru and ₹19,000 to ₹29,000 from Chennai. Cost on the ground
Malaysia is usually cheaper day to day, and the hotel is where the gap shows. In Singapore a four-star double is about ₹13,000 to ₹20,000 a night and a budget private double in Little India or Bugis usually starts around ₹6,000; in Kuala Lumpur a four-star city hotel is roughly ₹3,500 to ₹8,000 and a simple 2 to 3 star double ₹1,500 to ₹3,000. Food runs about ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 a head a day at Singapore's hawker centres, against about ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 eating simply in Kuala Lumpur. Tickets narrow the gap: Universal Studios Singapore is S$76 on non-peak dates (about ₹5,700) and the Night Safari S$58 (about ₹4,350), while the Petronas Twin Towers visit is RM127 on weekdays (about ₹3,000) and Genting's SkyWorlds theme park RM168 booked online a day ahead (about ₹3,950). Malaysian hotels also charge foreign guests a tourism tax of RM10 (about ₹235) per room per night. Rupee figures use about ₹75 to a Singapore dollar and ₹23.5 to a ringgit, the rates in September 2026.

What Singapore does better
- Big family days close together: Universal Studios, the Night Safari and Gardens by the Bay are all within about half an hour's drive of each other outside rush hour.
- An easy city: a metro that reaches most of it, card tap-in at the gates, safe and very clean streets.
- Compact: a complete first trip in four days, with no internal flight or long drive.
- Indian food easy to find, from Little India's vegetarian restaurants to the Indian-Muslim stalls at hawker centres.
What Malaysia does better
- No visa to arrange for Indians until 31 December 2026, only the free arrival card.
- More variety: the Petronas Towers and the Batu Caves steps in Kuala Lumpur, Genting Highlands at about 1,800 metres and 12 to 22°C an hour's drive away, and Langkawi's SkyCab, Sky Bridge and beaches an hour's flight on.
- A real beach holiday: Singapore has Sentosa, while Langkawi is a duty-free archipelago of 99 islands.
- Value: hotels and simple meals usually cost noticeably less, and a large Tamil community makes South Indian and vegetarian food easy to find.
Doing both in one week
Kuala Lumpur is about an hour from Singapore by air, while by road it is roughly five to seven hours including the border crossing, so a week splits well into three nights in Singapore and three in Kuala Lumpur with a Genting and Batu Caves day; nine days adds Langkawi. These combination trips start in Singapore and end in Kuala Lumpur, so you enter Singapore only once. Prices are per person on twin sharing:

Who should pick which
- Pick Singapore if you have four or five days, children who want Universal Studios and the Night Safari, and you would rather not change hotels.
- Pick Malaysia if value matters most, you want a hill resort and a beach as well as a city, or there is no time to arrange a visa; Indians need none there until 31 December 2026.
- Do both if you have seven days or more and this is your first trip to the region.
