Sikkim is small, steep and startlingly clean, and on a clear morning Kanchenjunga stands over the whole state. Gangtok is the base — MG Marg is a pedestrian boulevard where the town walks in the evening — and the classic day trips climb from there: Tsomgo lake at around 3,700 metres, frozen for much of the winter, and Nathu La on the old trading road to Tibet, which needs a permit and is not open every day. North Sikkim is the harder, better trip: a long drive to Lachen and Lachung, the valley of flowers at Yumthang in spring, and Gurudongmar lake higher still, where the air is thin enough that you feel every step. Most routes pair Sikkim with Darjeeling across the border in West Bengal — the toy train, Tiger Hill at dawn, tea estates below — and some continue into Bhutan. Trips run five to eleven days, all private, all shaped around your dates. Roads here are mountain roads, and an honest itinerary keeps a day spare for them.
