Kandy and Sigiriya packages

Sigiriya is a granite rock about 180 metres high with the ruins of a fifth-century palace on top, climbed past the frescoes and the Lion's Paw, and the Dambulla cave temple is about half an hour away. From Kandy both fit into one long day trip, about two and a half hours' drive each way, or you spend a night near Dambulla and see them at an easier pace.

Nuwara Eliya and Ella packages

Nuwara Eliya sits at about 1,870 metres among tea estates, two and a half to three hours up from Kandy past the Ramboda falls and its Hanuman temple, with the Seetha Amman temple, linked by tradition to the Ramayana, a few kilometres outside town. Places to visit in Sri Lanka

  • Sigiriya: The rock fortress rising about 200 metres from the plain, climbed past the frescoes and the Lion's Paw to the palace ruins on top; go early before the heat.
  • Dambulla Cave Temple: Five painted caves of Buddha statues on a hill, half an hour from Sigiriya and usually seen the same day.
  • Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth: The hill capital on its lake, the temple that holds the Buddha's tooth relic, and the evening cultural dance show.
  • Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage: The elephant herd bathing in the river, on the road between Colombo and Kandy.
  • Nuwara Eliya and the tea country: The colonial hill town at about 1,870 metres among tea estates, with a factory visit and the Ramboda Falls on the way up.
  • Ella: The Nine Arches Bridge with a train crossing it, Little Adam's Peak and Ravana Falls; the scenic train from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya is the way in.
  • Yala National Park: A jeep safari for leopards, elephants and crocodiles; the park's Block 1 usually closes for a spell in September or October.
  • Bentota and the Madu River: The south-west beach base with water sports, a boat ride through the mangroves and a turtle hatchery.
  • Galle Fort: The Dutch-built fort town on the south coast, its ramparts, lighthouse and cafes, a day trip from Bentota.
  • Mirissa: The whale-watching boats in season, roughly November to April, and Coconut Tree Hill.
  • Colombo: The Gangaramaya temple, Galle Face Green at sunset and the Independence Square walk on the last day.
  • Seetha Amman Temple: The temple outside Nuwara Eliya linked by tradition to the Ramayana, on the Ramayana trail with the Ravana caves at Ella.

Sri Lanka from Mumbai: visa, flights and the best time

Visa: Indian passport holders need a Sri Lanka ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization). Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration says every foreign visitor must obtain one before arrival. We apply for your ETA for you on the official eta.gov.lk site before you fly. As of September 2026 it is issued free of charge to Indian nationals, under a scheme in force since 25 May 2026, according to news reports. It allows 30 days in the country with a double entry and can be extended inside Sri Lanka for a fee. Your passport needs at least six months of validity from the day you land, and immigration can ask to see a confirmed return ticket and proof of funds. The free scheme is a government decision that has changed before, so we confirm the fee on eta.gov.lk when we apply; if one applies by then, it is paid separately.

Best time: December to April is the season for the classic circuit, and January to March are the driest months: sunny weather on the west and south coasts at Bentota, Galle and Mirissa, and clear days at Sigiriya and in Kandy. December can still be showery in Kandy and the hills, and April turns hot with afternoon thunderstorms. Late December, January and mid-April are the busiest and dearest weeks. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rain (heaviest in May and June) and rough seas to that coast, which is when the east coast has its best months and west-coast hotels are cheapest. October and November are the wettest months in Colombo, Kandy and much of the island.

Money: Sri Lankan rupee (LKR), about 3.4 rupees to one Indian rupee as of September 2026. Visa and Mastercard work in hotels, larger restaurants and shops; carry cash for tuk-tuks, small cafes, temple offerings and roadside stalls. Not every ATM accepts foreign cards and card skimming is common, so use ATMs inside banks or hotels. UPI works at some Sri Lankan merchants through NPCI International, but acceptance is patchy, so treat it as a back-up rather than the plan.
