Choose Kerala for a cheaper, passport-free holiday with a houseboat, easy vegetarian food and elderly parents in tow; choose Sri Lanka if you want a foreign trip at a similar flying time, with a rock fortress, the Temple of the Tooth and leopard country added to the tea hills and beaches. On paper the two look alike. In practice a five-day Sri Lanka trip costs roughly twice as much per person as five days in Kerala, needs a passport and an ETA (free for Indians as of September 2026), and feels like abroad. Cost: Kerala usually costs about half
Our Kerala land packages start at ₹9,999 for the 3 Days Munnar Cochin Bliss, and the classic circuit, the 5 Days Munnar Thekkady Alleppey Bliss, starts at ₹14,500 per person. Sri Lanka starts at ₹35,000 for the 5 Days Sri Lanka Kandy Bentota Bliss and the 6 Days Sri Lanka Kandy Galle Bliss at ₹41,000. All are per person on twin sharing with hotels, a private car and driver, and sightseeing; most Sri Lanka packages also include one more meal a day besides breakfast, where the Kerala circuit includes breakfast.
The flight widens the gap. A return to Colombo from South India is roughly ₹20,000 to ₹30,000 per person, while our Kerala guide puts a return flight from Hyderabad to Kochi at about ₹8,000 to ₹14,000, with the train cheaper still. Sri Lanka's heritage tickets add up too: Sigiriya alone is US$35, about ₹3,350. None of our Sri Lanka prices include flights; we quote them separately on request.
Visa and paperwork
Kerala needs nothing beyond the ID you already fly or take the train with. Sri Lanka needs a passport valid for at least six months from the day you land and an Electronic Travel Authorization applied for on eta.gov.lk before you arrive. As of September 2026 the tourist ETA is free for Indians and allows 30 days with a double entry, and immigration can ask for a return ticket and proof of funds. Getting there from Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai
Both are short hops. Chennai has the shortest flight to Colombo, about 1 hour 20 minutes non-stop, with Bengaluru at about 1 hour 25 minutes and Hyderabad about 2 hours, on SriLankan Airlines and IndiGo. Our Kerala cost guide puts Kochi at about 70 minutes from Bengaluru and 90 minutes from Hyderabad, and from Bengaluru Kerala is also an overnight train. On the ground the first drive is similar: about three hours (120 km) from Colombo airport to Kandy, and roughly 110 km of ghat road from Kochi airport up to Munnar, three to four hours with the waterfall stops. What each does better
Where they overlap: tea hills (Nuwara Eliya and Munnar), boat rides (the Madu river near Bentota and the Alleppey backwaters), beaches (Bentota and Galle; Varkala and Kovalam), elephants and Ayurveda. If you have done Kerala, Sri Lanka will feel familiar but different enough to be worth it.
- Sri Lanka does better: history and heritage. The fifth-century palace ruins on the Sigiriya rock, the Dambulla cave temples, the sacred city of Kandy around the Temple of the Tooth and the walled fort town of Galle are all World Heritage Sites within a week's drive. Add leopard safaris at Yala and Ramayana sites such as the Seetha Amman temple near Nuwara Eliya.
- Kerala does better: the backwaters, with a houseboat cruise on our Alleppey circuit, and a trip with no passport or international flight.
Food, money and getting around
Sri Lankan rice and curry, dhal, hoppers, string hoppers and kottu are close cousins of South Indian food, and vegetarian versions are easy to find. The catch is Maldive fish, the dried tuna in many curries and in coconut sambol, so vegetarians need to ask for dishes without it, and Jain meals need advance notice. In Kerala, pure-vegetarian food is simply easier to find.
In Sri Lanka you pay in Sri Lankan rupees, about 3.4 to one Indian rupee in September 2026. Cards work in hotels and larger shops, cash is needed for tuk-tuks and small cafes, and UPI works only at some merchants, so treat it as a back-up. In Kerala your UPI and cards work as they do at home. Both run by private car with a driver in our packages.
When to go: both are best in winter
In Sri Lanka, January to March are the driest months on the Bentota and Galle coast and in Kandy, and from May to September the south-west monsoon brings rain and rough seas to that coast. October and November are Sri Lanka's wettest months in Colombo and Kandy. October is wet in Kerala too, with Kochi airport averaging about 343 mm of rain against Colombo's 359 mm, but November is where Kerala pulls ahead, at about 176 mm against 346 mm, so Kerala is the safer pick that month. Who should pick which
Pick Kerala if:
- anyone in the group has no valid passport, or it is a first long trip with elderly parents;
- you want strict vegetarian or Jain food without asking at every meal;
- the whole trip has to come in under about ₹45,000 per person;

Pick Sri Lanka if:
- you have done Kerala and want something familiar but different;
- you want a foreign trip with a short flight and, as of September 2026, no visa fee;
