The best time to visit Sri Lanka from India is January to March, the driest months for the classic route through Kandy, Sigiriya, the tea hills and the beaches at Bentota and Galle. December and April are good too, with more showers. From May to September the south-west monsoon reaches the beach coast our trips use, and October and November are the wettest months in Colombo and Kandy, and the cheapest. "The coast" here means the south-west coast from Bentota to Galle and Mirissa, where our beach nights are. The monsoon rain is heaviest in May and June. Temperatures for each season are below.
December to March: the best months
Dry, sunny beach days at Bentota, Galle and Mirissa, and clear days at Sigiriya and in Kandy. Colombo and the south coast run at 23 to 32°C, Kandy about 18 to 30°C, and Nuwara Eliya, at about 1,870 metres, 10 to 22°C and colder at night, so pack a jacket. January to March are the driest: Colombo's long-term averages are 77 to 103 mm of rain a month then, against 171 mm in December, when Kandy and the hills can still be showery.
Late December and January are the peak weeks for prices and hotel availability. February and March are just as dry and a little easier to book. Whale-watching boat trips from Mirissa run roughly from November to April; confirm the dates with the operator. Beach-weighted trips such as the 5 Days Sri Lanka Bentota Beach Retreat are at their best now.
April: hot, with stormy afternoons
Colombo is 25 to 32°C and humid, Kandy 20 to 30°C and Nuwara Eliya 12 to 22°C. Afternoon thunderstorms start on the coast, and Colombo's average April rainfall of 249 mm is more than double any month from January to March. The Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April fills Nuwara Eliya and the hill towns with Sri Lankan holidaymakers, and flight fares from India rise around it, so book early if your dates fall that week.
May to September: the monsoon on the beach coast
The south-west monsoon brings rain and rough seas to the Bentota, Galle and Mirissa coast, heaviest in May and June, and heavy rain to the western slopes of the hills. Colombo stays at 25 to 31°C, Kandy about 19 to 29°C, and Nuwara Eliya 13 to 21°C and often misty. Swim only where the hotel says the sea is safe.
The trade-off is price: west-coast hotels are at their cheapest, and these are the east coast's best months instead. A route with no beach nights, such as the 6 Days Sri Lanka Sigiriya Dambulla Adventure, avoids the rough sea, though its Nuwara Eliya nights can be misty and wet. Indian school holidays in May and June can push flight fares up. In Yala, Blocks 1 and 2 are closed to visitors from 14 September to 15 October 2026 because of drought, according to Sri Lankan news reports of the wildlife department's notice, and the closure could be extended, so check before booking the 8 Days Sri Lanka Yala Safari Escape for those weeks.
October and November: the wettest, and the cheapest
The inter-monsoon months are the wettest in Colombo, Kandy and much of the island: Colombo averages about 359 mm of rain in October and 346 mm in November, and November is Kandy's wettest month. Colombo is 24 to 31°C and Kandy about 19 to 28°C. Heavy showers and the occasional cyclone come with the season; Cyclone Ditwah caused severe floods and landslides in November 2025. Prices are the lowest of the year, so these months suit travellers who can keep the plan flexible and accept some road delays in the hills.
Festivals worth timing
- Kandy Esala Perahera, July or August: the night procession of decorated elephants and dancers hosted by the Temple of the Tooth, with dates set each year by the lunar calendar. In 2026 it ran from 18 to 28 August.
- Sinhala and Tamil New Year, mid-April: hill towns such as Nuwara Eliya fill with Sri Lankan holidaymakers, so book early.
- Poya days: every full moon is a public holiday, and alcohol is not usually on sale in shops or bars. Check the date before planning an anniversary or honeymoon dinner.
Cheapest and busiest months
- Busiest and dearest: late December, January and mid-April.
- Dearer flights from India: late December to early January, mid-April and the May and June school holidays.
- Cheapest: west-coast hotels from May to September, and the lowest prices overall in October and November, when the weather is least reliable.
- Dry weather without the January crowds: February and March.

What to avoid
- A beach-first trip to Bentota, Galle or Mirissa in May or June.
- October and November if you cannot move a day around.
- A Yala safari between 14 September and 15 October 2026.
- Nuwara Eliya over the mid-April New Year without a booking.
- Assuming the hill-country train runs end to end. After Cyclone Ditwah the section through Ella is back in service, but the stretch out of Kandy was still reported closed in mid-2026; check a week before you travel.
