Meghalaya means the abode of clouds, and the state spends a good part of the year inside them. Everything starts at Guwahati in Assam, because that is where the airport is, and climbs from there into the Khasi hills. Sohra — Cherrapunji — and Mawsynram trade the title of wettest place on earth between them, and the plateau edge there is a line of waterfalls dropping into Bangladesh: Nohkalikai, Seven Sisters, Wei Sawdong down its wooden ladders. Below the edge are the living root bridges, grown rather than built by training the roots of rubber figs across the streams over decades. The double-decker bridge at Nongriat is about three thousand steps down and the same back up, and everyone who does it says the same two things about it. Dawki has the Umngot, whose water is so clear the boats appear to float above the riverbed on a bright day. Mawlynnong sells itself as Asia's cleanest village and largely lives up to it. Trips run four to eighteen days, private, and often continue into Assam, Arunachal or Nagaland.
