The North East is eight states, and no single trip covers them — the useful question is which two or three fit the time you have. Meghalaya is the usual first visit: waterfalls, the living root bridges and the clear water at Dawki, all within reach of Guwahati. Assam is the valley floor beneath it, with Kaziranga's grasslands and the one-horned rhino, and tea estates around Jorhat. Sikkim and Darjeeling sit at the western end and are really a separate journey — Kanchenjunga, high lakes, a toy train — often done with Bhutan. Arunachal is the ambitious one: Tawang is two hard days of driving from Guwahati over the Sela pass, and needs an Inner Line Permit, as does Nagaland, whose Hornbill festival in December is the reason many people go at all. Distances here are measured in hours, not kilometres, and the roads are the reason. Our North East trips run four to eighteen days for that reason. All are private, and we would rather talk you into fewer states than sell you a week of driving.
