  • Ninh Binh: The "Halong Bay on land": a rowing boat through the Trang An or Tam Coc caves and the steps up Mua Cave for the view, a day trip from Hanoi.
  • Golden Bridge and Ba Na Hills: The bridge held by two giant stone hands above Da Nang, reached by cable car, with the French village and gardens on the hilltop.
  • Hoi An Ancient Town: The lantern-lit old port town with the Japanese Bridge, the tailors and the river boats at night, 40 minutes from Da Nang.
  • Da Nang: My Khe beach, the Marble Mountains and the Dragon Bridge that breathes fire on weekend nights.
  • Hue: The former imperial capital: the Citadel and Forbidden Purple City, the royal tombs and a boat on the Perfume River.
  • Ho Chi Minh City: The War Remnants Museum, Notre Dame and the Central Post Office, Ben Thanh market and the rooftop bars of District 1.
  • Cu Chi Tunnels: The wartime tunnel network outside Saigon, with a stretch you can crawl through; a half day.
  • Mekong Delta: A day trip from Saigon to the river islands: sampan rides in the canals, coconut candy workshops and the floating markets.
  • Phu Quoc: The island off the south coast for the beaches, the cable car to Hon Thom and the night market, usually the last stop.

Vietnam from Pune: visa, flights and the best time

Visa: As of September 2026, Indian passport holders need a Vietnam e-visa, applied for online at evisa.gov.vn before travel (US$25 single entry, US$50 multiple entry). The law allows three working days, but the embassy advises five or more, so we apply for the e-visa for you at least three weeks before you fly. It is valid for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry. The visa fee is paid separately. Your passport needs six months of validity left.

Flights: There is no non-stop from Pune to Vietnam: connect once through Bangkok, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, 8 to 10 hours including the stop, or start from Mumbai, about three hours away by road, which has non-stops to Hanoi.

Best time: Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Halong Bay are best from September to November and again in April to June; December to March is cool and misty in the north. Da Nang and Hoi An are dry and hot from February to August; September to December is their rainy season, with flooding in Hoi An most years in October and November. Saigon, the Mekong and Phu Quoc are driest from December to April. Storms can cancel Halong cruises in the summer months.

Money: Vietnamese dong (VND). Cards work in hotels and city restaurants; carry cash for street food, markets and taxis outside the big cities. UPI does not work in Vietnam yet (as of September 2026; a UPI link was agreed in May 2026 but is not running).
